The Name

Millennials are becoming known for choosing baby names that are rare, and in many cases original. Typically, the more obscure or unique the name, the better. But rarely is the etymology (the original meaning) of great importance. If it sounds good, it works!

But Hebrew culture was different. Names were often packed with significant meaning. Sometimes names had a prophetic nature to them, meaning a person would eventually "become" whatever the name meant. At times, a person's name was changed during his or her life to indicate a significant change in their character or calling (Abraham, Sarah, Paul, etc.).

In the Old Testament, God revealed His name to Moses as Yahweh. From that time forward, other words would be added to Yahweh whenever He acted on behalf of His people, creating Hebrew compound names for God. These names reveal what God is like in everyday life. For example, Yahweh Jireh, which means "God provides."

This series, The Name, is about discovering the nature of God who walks with us each day in the mountains and valleys of life.
